Toyota Acceleration-Related Problems and Recall
On September 29, 2009, Toyota recalled 3.8 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles to reduce the risk of floormats interfering with gas pedals and causing them to stick, keeping the throttle in the open position.
On January 26, 2010, Toyota announced a major recall of almost 2/3 of it's current line of production and has halted sales and manufacturing in the US. In a new release, a Toyota spokesman said "Our investigation indicates that there is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position," It is not known how many vehicles in Canada are affected by the recall, said Sandy Di Felice, director of external affairs for Toyota Canada. But the company is recalling 2.3 million vehicles in the U.S. for the same reason. The company said the problem is rare but sometimes happens when the pedal mechanism gets worn out. The accelerator then becomes "harder to depress, slower to return or, in the worst case, stuck in a partially depressed position," the company said.

Toyota's Electronic Throttle Control - "Drive by Wire"
Since Toyota introduced "electronic throttles" in 2002, numerous instances of sudden or unintended acceleration and being unable to slow or bring vehicles to a stop even though the driver had let up on or completely released the gas pedal have increased dramatically from the rare instances experienced when the throttles were mechanical. Toyota insisted that its gas pedals could not become jammed on their own, but government investigations of very limited scope revealed a recurring problem with floormats becoming entangled with accelerators and causing them to remain depressed or to be slow to return to the idle position. A stuck accelerator pedal can result in runaway or high-speed vehicles that crash, causing serious injuries or death.
Toyota's recall involving throttle problems and floormats includes the following models:
2009-2010 Camry
